Laos backs Thailand's special economic zone in Nong Khai

BANGKOK, November 28 (TNA) - Thailand hosts the 21st Thai-Lao General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting in Bangkok on Friday, during which the Lao side supports the Thai government's plan to turn Nong Khai Province in the Thai Northeast, opposite Vientiane, Laos' capital, to be a special economic zone, due to a large trade volume in the area, where there is also convenience for cross-border communications. Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan told journalists of Laos' positive response, after the meeting co-chaired by him and visiting Lao Defence Minister Lieutenant General Sengnuan Saiyalath. General Prawit said the Lao side also urged that Thailand speed up completing border demarcation between the two neighbouring countries and to help maintain peace along the Mekong River. According to the Thai deputy prime minister, both sides also discussed close cooperation on anti-narcotics actions along the common border and a plan to organise their next Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting at the regional army chiefs level, aimed at strengthening military relations between the two countries.
