Last group of Thais arrive home from Egypt

BANGKOK, Sept 1 (TNA) - A total of 49 Thai students arrived home from violence-prone Egypt early Sunday (Sept 1), making the eighth and final group to return to Thailand voluntarily, a senior Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry official said. They were welcomed upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi International Airport by officials of the Foreign Affairs and the Social Development and Human Security ministries. The evacuated students were later transported by buses to their destinations. Altogether 1,192 Thais have returned home to date by flights arranged by the government while some 200 others returned to Thailand by their personnel arrangements since the evacuation began on August 19, the official said. There are still not too many Thai students left in Egypt but they live far away from bloody protesting areas, the official said, adding that they have decided to continue staying there as they are preparing for examination. However, the Thai embassy in Cairo is prepared to evacuate them in case the situation deteriorates. Also, a number of Thai workers who are still staying in Egypt and well taken care of by their employers have already registered with the embassy and could evacuate immediately if they think their staying is unsafe, the official added.(TNA)
