Lightning blamed for power blackout in Thai South

BANGKOK, May 26 (TNA) - Senior officials of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) have come into conclusion that Tuesday night’s power blackout in all the 14 southern provinces was caused by lightning which hit a high-voltage transmission in Phetchaburi province which supplies power to the South, said Thana Putarungsi, deputy governor of EGAT. Speaking to a press conference, held at the airport in Hua Hin resort, Thana said inspection made by EGAT experts found clear burn marks on the high-voltage transmission line in Phetchaburi’s Ban Lat district. Tuesday' power outrage lasted between 6.52 p.m. and 11.37 p.m.. Thana said it took several hours for electricians to fix the problem because power supply in the region is far less than the demand. He expressed his sorrow for the unfortunate incident which had affected businesses and tourism industry in the South and said EGAT officials had put efforts to restore power on that night. According to the deputy EGAT governor, on that night alone Thailand spent about 12 million baht for the purchase of power from Malaysia in order to fix the problem. (TNA)
