LPN suggests government beef up measures against human trafficking

BANGKOK, July 2 (TNA) -- Thailand's Labour Rights Promotion Network Foundation (LPN) suggested to the government that it should beef up measures against human trafficking, where those involved should be thoroughly punished and middlemen be eradicated, while measures on Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing should also be improved. LPN Director Sompong Sakaeo said the State Department’s Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report 2016, released on June 30 has upgraded Thailand to Tier 2 Watch List. He said that the new ranking improvement is a pay off for Thailand's efforts in its fights against human trafficking. However, Mr Sompong said the effort fell a little short, as the country has only met the lowest standard of the report. He said from now on, all concerned agencies must continue forward with more efforts to solve human trafficking problems from the country, where LPN has targeted to see Thailand moves from the Tier 2 Watchlist to the Tier 2 rankings by next year. He then noted that to successfully solve human trafficking problems, the government must first eradicate corruption from the state sector, where prosecutions on those involved must be strictly implemented to prevent future wrongdoings. He noted that the government should also allow the private and society sectors to have more parts in helping to solve the problems of human trafficking and IUU. (END)
