Magazine with Final "Oishinbo" Episode before Suspension Goes on Sale

Tokyo, May 19 (Jiji Press)--The latest issue of the Japanese weekly magazine that contains "Oishinbo" went on sale on Monday, offering the gourmet manga series' final episode before suspension stemming from the controversy provoked by its recent episodes over the March 2011 nuclear accident. In the newest issue of Shogakukan Inc.'s Big Comic Spirits magazine, the publisher carried a notice that Oishinbo will be suspended for some time from the next issue and a special story responding to criticism of the manga series' depictions of possible health effects of radiation from Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s <9501> Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant that was knocked out by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The weekly's chief editor Hiroshi Murayama said in the latest issue, "We take criticisms and severe dressing-down seriously, and will review the way of depiction in the manga series." The latest issue included the pros and cons of 13 experts about the Oishinbo episodes in question. It also carried protests from the governments of Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, the Fukushima town of Futaba, Osaka Prefecture and the city of Osaka. Futaba is one of the two municipalities that host the stricken nuclear power station. The city of Osaka accepted debris from the quake and tsunami to help disposal. In the final episode of Oishinbo's serial titled "The Truth of Fukushima," characters visit a livestock farmer family who moved to Hokkaido, northernmost Japan, from the Fukushima village of Iitate. They say that it is their responsibility to call for state compensation for anyone who wants to move out of Fukushima. Oishinbo stirred up controversy by its depictions of the lead character having nosebleeds after visiting the nuclear plant and another character saying that residents near a facility in the city of Osaka to incinerate the disaster debris are suffering problems in their eyes or respiratory organs.
