Majlis adopts executive procedure for children of Iranian mums

Tehran, May 13, IRNA – Majlis on Monday adopted executive procedure to give children of Iranian mothers the citizen's rights. According to the executive procedure, mothers of such children can apply for citizenship on behalf of their minor children. Note 1: If the children are above 18 years of age, they can personally apply for Iranian citizenship provided that they do not have a security record be determined by the Minister of Intelligence in a maximum three months. The bill also obligates the police to issue the permit for the non-Iranian fathers' residence in Iran. The bill was passed with 179 yes, 21 no, and 4 blank votes. Note 2: If the father or mother is deceased or out of reach and if the consanguinity of the applicant is questioned, a qualified court of law will make the decision. It also allows the non-Iranian nationals, one of whose parents had been born in Iran, to apply for citizenship after the age of 18. Such applicants will be granted citizenship if they enjoy a clean security and criminal record. The bill is considered a major breakthrough to protect the women's rights. As per the new law, thousands of children born to Iranian mothers abroad and inside the country will enjoy the rights of a citizen enshrined by the Civil Rights Law of Iran.
