Malaysia To Address UNSC On MH17 Tribunal

KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will seek the support of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) members to establish an international criminal tribunal over the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 last year. In a statement, Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said he was representing Malaysia in New York on Wednesday, along with four other members of the Joint Investigation Team for MH17. The members are from Belgium, Australia, the Netherlands and Ukraine. Liow said a year ago, the UNSC was united as it adopted Resolution 2166 by consensus, a few days after the downing of the aircraft, to condemn the incident and calling for a thorough and independent international investigation, in accordance with international civil aviation guidelines. The resolution called on all states to cooperate fully in the international investigation and demanded that those responsible be held accountable. "We are at a crossroads once again, as we call on the council to remember the pledge to cooperate fully with efforts to establish accountability of those responsible for the downing of MH17. "To do this, an ad hoc international criminal tribunal must be established. Both here and around the world, we will continue to mourn the unjust loss of the 298 precious lives," he added. Liow said Malaysia remained single-minded in urging the international community to take decisive action on this matter to ensure the criminals who caused this tragedy were brought to justice. All 298 passengers and crew on board Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur perished when the aircraft was shot down over Donetsk in eastern Ukraine on July 17 last year. --BERNAMA
