Malaysia Bags Five Awards At WSIS 2016 In Geneva

KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian delegation has done the country proud by picking up five awards in four categories at this year's World Summit on Information Society Forum (WSIS 2016) which is being held in Geneva from May 2 to 6. Emerging as the winner of the E-environment category was the Eco2 project, which is a next generation green data centre cooling technology developed by Green Data Centre LLP (GDC). The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in a statement here said the Eco2 featured the world's only renewable, biodegradable, sustainable and non-toxic ICT specific coolant that reduces energy consumption and carbon footprints by half. The MCMC acted as the Technology Kickstarter whilst the Malaysian Technical Standards Forum Bhd (MTSFB) under MCMC and the Green ICT Working Group facilitated the development of the proof of concept for Eco2. The Malaysian delegation was led by Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Jailani Johari. GDC LLP was represented by its founder and Chief Executive Officer, Matthew Rajendra. Meanwhile, the Kemaman Smart Community Project, an initiative by MCMC, won the award under the Communication and Information Infrastructure Category and would be listed in the WSIS Stocktaking: Success Stories 2016 – an ITU e-publication. The Smart Community initiative was introduced in early 2015 in Kemaman, east coast state of Terengganu with the main objective to uplift the socio-economic status of the community using ICT as a platform to provide faster and more effective access to information. One of the flagship programmes under this initiative is the flood management system which leverages ICT in managing flood and disaster management. Multimedia University (MMU) won two awards in the E-science category. Both entries are computer aided diagnostic systems designed to assist doctors and radiologists. The first is to detect breast cancer through the analysis of MRI scanning, while the second is for early ischemic stroke detection. CyberSecurity Malaysia picked up the fifth award, which is in the International and Regional Cooperation category, over the project titled “Securing the Cyberspace through International Collaboration of the Computer Emergency Response Teams”. The WSIS Forum was co-organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Forum is a platform for the coordination of implementation activities by parties of interest, exchange of information and knowledge, sharing of best practices and public/private sharing on reaching development targets. -- BERNAMA
