"Malaysia Government Making Positive Move To Get More Indian Students In Public Institutions"

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Indian Educational Development Association (TheMind) has welcomed the government's initiative to increase the number of Indian students studying at public institutions of higher learning (IPTAs). Its president Dr K. Kanagi said the initiative taken by the Higher Education Ministry (KPT) in seeking ways to resolve the issue will be a positive move for the community and also the country. She said policy makers from various organisations and agencies need to co-operate and come out with a decision to overcome the core issue, which was poverty. "A lot of thoughts, ideas and efforts need to be put into it for definite implementation," she told Bernama here on Monday. Yesterday, Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin had said his ministry would find ways to increase entry of Indian students at IPTAs as the numbers were dropping. Meanwhile, former Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department T. Murugiah called on the government to form a special task force to identify mechanisms towards achieving the objective. "As our Prime Minister Najib Razak is very concerned about this matter, serious attention needs to be given, especially for the poor," he said. -- BERNAMA
