Malaysia Hope High Level Political Forum Not Be Just A "Talk Shop"

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia hopes the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development will not be just a "talk shop" made up of roundtable or panel discussions devoid of decision in order to chart the way for an ambitious post 2015 development agenda. Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Hussein Haniff said the forum should take a decision on the scope and methodology of the global sustainable development report at the closing session of the HLPF. It should also decide at its future ministerial meeting, on the theme and organisation of its meetings, he said at the First Meeting of the HLPF on Sustainable Development Under The Auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), in New York on Monday. The text of his statement was made available to Bernama here, Wednesday. He also said another element that needed to be considered were the key development issues including Means of Impelementation (MoI) where it should be given a prominent place in the structures of the forum and its priority issues, meetings and implementation mechanisms. At the same time, he said an important lesson that the HLFP could retain from the Commission on sustainable development is to continue the Commission's openness towards the participation of major groups. "Multi-stakeolder dialogues should reflect geographical balance, including think-tanks and research institutions from the South, such as the South Centre and the Third World Network," he said. Hussein also hoped that raising the political profile of the institutional framework for sustainable development would lead to greater commitment from governments in the implementation of sustainable development. -- BERNAMA
