Malaysia Invited To International Architecture Exhibition-La Biennale In Venice

By Azlee Nor Mahmud KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has been invited to participate for the third time in the prestigious International Architecture Exhibition-La Biennale in Venice, Italy after making an impressive debut in 2010. The architecture exhibition, to be held for six months starting from June 7 to Nov 23, 2014, is an iconic event for architecture and art globally. Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) is currently collaborating with the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) to coordinate 24 participants comprising architects, artists and multimedia designer for the exhibition. One of the participants, iPartnership (M) Sdn Bhd, regards the event as a good way to showcase the talents and capabilities of Malaysian architecture professionals on a global stage. "Malaysia has been invited to the by invitation only prestigious event and as an invitee and being allotted a place within Arsenale is a recognition by itself," its Managing Director Indra Ramanathan told Bernama. Arsenale is one of two official exhibition venues (the other one is Giardini) where Malaysians has a pavilion to display their ideas. Indra said the Malaysia Pavilion and delegation had always received good feedback from the exhibition. He added that visitors were truly interested in the multi-cultural ideas based on the 'Sufficiency' theme that was produced by the architects exhibiting in the Malaysia Pavilion. "They were also very interested in Malaysia and the vibrancy of the built environments in our capital cities," he said. On the Malaysia Pavilion, Indra said the ideas on display could be translated to very real solutions for the built environments in various locations around the world. "It is the application of these ideas that will be a challenge as these ideas require patrons and support from governments, developers and individuals," Indra said. He said the Matrade team in Milan were supportive and was on hand to assist the delegation from the time that the group arrived in Venice for the set-up process. "We were having regular meetings on video calls via Internet with Matrade Milan from the time we started the planning process. They were integral in the process...assisting with advice, clearing and transporting the exhibits from Malaysia to the Biennale," added Indra. He said there should be more grants allocated towards these kind of exhibitions where individuals are representing the nation. "It is imperative that efforts such as this is encouraged and supported by the government and its agencies to raise Malaysia's professional profile in the international intellectual stage," he added. The exhibition is the oldest and largest by exhibition space and visitorship, and undisputedly the most prestigious by invitation only architecture exhibition. --BERNAMA
