Malaysia To Mobilise Disaster Relief Exercise Initiatives At Asean Level - Foreign Minister

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), Jan 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will use its chairmanship of Asean 2015 to undertake disaster relief exercise initiatives to assist member countries affected by floods, said Foreign Minister Anifah Aman (right). He said through such initiatives, affected Asean member countries could rehabilitate quickly after being hit by floods as had occurred in the East Coast recently. "Malaysia does not only receive flood aid from Asean and neighbouring countries but also from foreign countries such as Timor-Leste. This is a blessing," he told reporters at his office here Wednesday. Anifah was met after receiving a courtesy call from Brunei High Commissioner to Malaysia, Alaihuddin Awang Mohd Taha (left) and Timor-Leste Envoy in Malaysia, Jose Antonio Amorim Dias. During the courtesy call, Alaihuddin presented a donation amounting to $500,000 Brunei dollars (US$374,812 million) from the government of Brunei to the Malaysian government. Meanwhile Dias informed Anifah that Timor-Leste Acting Foreign Minister Roberto Soares had presented a donation of US$1 million (RM3.58 million) from the government of Timor-Leste to the Malaysian Envoy to Timor-Leste, Tajul Aman Mohammad in Dili at 9 am (Malaysian time) Wednesday. Commenting on the aid received by Malaysia, Anifah said he had expressed the Malaysian government gratitude and appreciation to the two countries' representatives during their respective courtesy calls. "The aid will be used as soon as possible to help the flood victims," he said. Later Anifah handed over his ministry's contribution to 15 Wisma Putra (Foreign Affairs Ministry) staff, whose families were flood victims. He also presented donations in the form of essential items collected by the Wisma Putra Sports and Welfare Club and Foreign Ministry Women's Association (Perwakilan) to the Civil Defence Department (JPAM) to be distributed to the flood victims. The items were received by JPAM (Management) Deputy Director-General Zainun Salleh. (photoBERNAMA) -- BERNAMA
