Malaysia Needs To Establish A Science Media Centre - Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- A Science Media Centre (PMS) should be established in the country to bridge the communication gap between scientists and the public, said Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ewon Ebin. He said with a PMS set up, media practitioners and scientists could collaborate in conveying scientific information in a simpler and more efficient manner. "Some issues such as epidemics, the impact of global warming on health and agriculture need a systematic and simple approach, but the information is filled with jargon which is difficult to understand. "One approach practiced by developed countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada is the formation of a 'Science Media Centre'. Malaysia needs to have such a centre," he said. He was speaking to reporters after opening the APEC Young Scientists Workshop on Effective Science Communication in the 21st century, here Tuesday. The two-day workshop organised jointly by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), ASM Young Scientists Network and APEC, began on Monday with the participation of 85 young scientists from APEC economies. -- BERNAMA
