Malaysia Pledges To Strengthen Commitment To Raise Quality Of Education In ASEAN

PETALING JAYA (Selangor, Malaysia), May 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysia as the chairman of the 9th ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting (ASED) has pledged to strengthen its commitment to plan, trailblaze and forge collaborations in matters related to education. Malaysian Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid said the collaboration could be done between ASEAN members and ASEAN +3 (China, Japan, South Korea), members of the East Asian Summit (EAS) and various international agencies to monitor regional cooperation in the field of education more comprehensively. "It is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals(SDG) 2030 which have been agreed to at the global level especially in raising the quality of education. "Besides this, it is also in tune with the ASEAN Community Blueprint 2025: Together Forging Ahead, ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025, Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2015 and Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint 2015-2025," he said. Mahdzir was speaking at a press conference in conjunction with first day of the 9th ASED here Wednesday. ASEAN comprises of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The EAS comprises the countries of ASEAN in addition to Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea and the United States. The 9th ASED is being held over two days beginning Wednesday, and Malaysia has been appointed the chairman of ASEAN Education for two years, starting this year. Regarding the meeting, Mahdzir said it emphasised aspects of sustainability, well-being and development of ASEAN citizens, in line with its theme - 'Fostering ASEAN Community of Learners - Empowering Lives through Education'. "This theme is consistent with the function of education as a catalyst for the development of human excellence in order to achieve a higher level of life. In this regard, education should be given priority as a key mechanism for the creation of the ASEAN Community," he said. He said the 9th ASED was attended by 10 ASEAN ministers of Education, three ASEAN+3 ministers of Education, and five representatives of EAS member countries to discuss the roadmap for ASEAN education in the next five years. Meanwhile, in a joint statement, the ASEAN Education Ministers approved the ASEAN Declaration on Strengthening Education for Out-of-School Children (OOSC) and Out-of-School Youth. The joint statement said the Ministers also agreed to submit the Declaration to the ASEAN Coordinating Council for their consideration and for submission to the 28th ASEAN Summit in a September this year in Laos, for adoption. "The Ministers also approved the revised Charter of the ASEAN University Network (AUN) in consideration of the need for AUN to be aligned with the new developments in ASEAN," it said. --BERNAMA
