Malaysia Re-Elected As IMO Council Member - Transport Minister

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has been re-elected for the sixth consecutive time as a council member of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the 2016-2017 term. Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said the re-election reflected the recognition of Malaysia's role in international shipping, especially in the IMO. "As a seafaring nation with major interests in marine transportation, Malaysia is committed to participating actively in the IMO," he said in a statement, here, Sunday. The re-election was conducted at the 29th IMO Assembly at its headquarters in London, United Kingdom. Liow said at the moment, Malaysia was listed as among the top 30 countries in terms of international shipping fleet with a total tonnage of 7.16 million involving more than 50,000 sailors. -- BERNAMA
