Malaysia: Strengthening Military Ties With Neighbouring Countries To Combat Cross-Border Threats

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Good military relations and cooperation, as well as sharing of intelligence with neighbouring countries are crucial in tackling the new cross-border threats. Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said in confronting such threats to the country's sovereignty and dignity, these factors were far more valuable than the need for assets. "New cross-border threats such as IS (Islamic State militant group) are problems that are not unique to Malaysia. "I believe cooperation among the 10 ASEAN countries coupled with military- to-military relations, should be promoted," he told reporters at Wisma Pertahanan, here, Monday. He was speaking after representing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah in conferring the gallantry award, Darjah Kepahlawanan Angkatan Tentera to Indonesia's National Defence Forces chief General Dr Moeldoko and Singapore's Defence Forces chief Lieutenant-General Ng Chee Meng. -- BERNAMA
