Malaysia Supports Placing Palestine Under UN's International Protection System - Envoy

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia supports the call by the State of Palestine, to place Palestine under the international protection system of the United Nations following the worsening violence in the Gaza Strip. Malaysia's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), Hussein Haniff said Malaysia also reiterated the need to convene a conference of the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to address Israel's continued non-compliance with the provisions of the instrument. "Israel's ruthless military aggression on civilians is uncalled for and is a crime against humanity. "Malaysia therefore calls on the United Nations, especially the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the international community to take immediate action to halt Israel's atrocities against the Palestinian people of Gaza and work towards bringing calm and peace between Israel and Palestine," he said. Hussein said this at the Emergency Meeting On The Situation In the Middle East Including The Palestinian Question at the UN Security Council in New York on Tuesday. The text of his speech was made available to Bernama Wednesday. On July 13, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had written to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to ask that Palestinians be placed under an international protection system administered by the United Nations. Malaysia continues to condemn and called again for a ceasefire between Palestine and Israel as the latest violence has killed more than 600 Palestinians while injuring more than 3,500 Palestinians and over 80,000 Palestinians have been displaced. The Malaysian envoy said Israel's attacks and bombardments of civilians' homes, hospitals and schools, which began on July 8, constituted a gross violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which amounts to war crimes. Stressing that no country should be allowed to be above the law, Hussein, however, said that UNSC had remained quiet and paralysed in the face of aggression, expansion and lack of accountability by the Occupying Power. "The silence is deafening. The UNSC should redeem itself and uphold the responsibilities entrusted to it in relation to the failure of Israel to implement the numerous resolutions before it, and take immediate measures to address this great injustice," he said. Expressing Malaysia's unremitting efforts, Hussein said Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak had spoken to President Mahmoud Abbas, conveying Malaysia's commitment to do all it can in assisting and standing by the just and legitimate cuase of the Palestinian people. He said several Malaysian non-governmental organisations had departed for Gaza as part of a humanitarian mission to deliver food and medical supplies, and to provide psychosocial support to the victims. Besides these, he said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had renewed its call for financial contributions from the public to help ease the burden of Palestinians under the Palestine Humanitarian Fund, that was set up by the ministry in 2002. -- BERNAMA
