Malaysian DPM Zahid To Attend CHOGM 2015 In Malta From Nov 27 To 29

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be leading the Malaysian delegation to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Malta from Nov 27 to 29. He will be accompanied by his wife, Hamidah Khamis. The Malaysian delegation would also comprise Foreign Minister Anifah Aman, and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, Natural Resources and Environment Ministry and the Economic Planning Unit, a statement from Wisma Putra (Foreign Ministry) said Thursday. CHOGM, a biennial summit, is an important platform for the heads of government of member states to come together to discuss global and Commonwealth issues, and to decide on collective policies and initiatives. CHOGM in Malta will address issues such as climate change, migration, violent extremism and radicalisation, building resilience in small states, sustainable development, the empowerment of youth, gender equality and human rights. CHOGM 2015 themed "Adding Global Value" would seek to use the Commonwealth's strengths in international politics to influence and effect change on important global issues, the statement said. "Given its geographical extent around the globe, the actions and initiatives taken at the Commonwealth level will undoubtedly add to global value in issues of interest and concerns of the people of the Commonwealth," it added. The CHOGM in Malta will also see the election of a new Commonwealth secretary-general to replace Kamalesh Sharma from India, whose term of office will end on March 31, next year. CHOGM 2015 is preceded by the pre-CHOGM Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting which will be held from Nov 25 to 26. Anifah will participate in the meeting. -- BERNAMA
