Malaysia's IIUM Pioneers Islamic Universities Global Panel

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has pioneered the setting up of a panel of Islamic universities throughout the world to review the standard and quality of Islamic studies in future. IIUM president Dr Rais Yatim said the panel comprised representatives from 57 major Islamic universities throughout the world who would hold roundtable talks to set the international standards for teaching and learning in Islamic fields of study. "The panel will also draw up the guidelines for inventors based on Islamic technology and ensure that what students learn are not just taken from western knowledge. "We must have our own standards because Islamic civilisation used to have inventors at one time who were different from (those in) Christian or other civilisations," he told reporters after delivering IIUM President's Premier Lecture here Tuesday. He said the need for guidelines and standards for Islamic studies in Islamic universities throughout the world was vital so that they did not follow the benchmarks set by noted universities in the West. He said the panel is expected to hold a convention and roundtable talks by the end of this year. --BERNAMA
