Man Held for Attacking Japanese Tourists in Turkey

Jerusalem, Sept. 10 (Jiji Press)--Turkish authorities on Tuesday held a man for killing a Japanese female tourist and injuring another in Cappadocia, a major sightseeing spot in central Turkey, the previous day, officials at the Turkish embassy in Tokyo said. The officials said they were informed of the detention of the suspect by their home government. Details such as charges against the man are not available, they said. The two Japanese tourists--Mai Kurihara and Hoshie Teramatsu--were attacked when they were walking around Zemi Valley in Cappadocia. Kurihara, 22, was killed, while Teramatsu, also 22, was injured and had been unconscious. They are both seniors at the Faculty of Education at Niigata University in central Japan. Local media reported the two were stabbed in the neck or other parts of their bodies. The purpose of the attack is not known, while local police are reportedly investigating the incident as a possible case of robbery. The body of Kurihara was transported to Ankara early Tuesday and an autopsy was conducted, said officials of the Japanese embassy in the Turkish capital. Teramatsu regained consciousness after undergoing a surgery, media reports said. The suspect was held after Teramatsu confirmed the man in a photo shown by the police, according to the reports. Meanwhile, Turkey's Anadolu news agency reported that two men have been held over the attack on the two Japanese tourists. Another media report said a 27-year-old man has been detained. The police are working to find a vehicle shown in a footage shot by a security camera installed near the site of the attack, according to local media reports. END
