Mataram Hajj Pilgrims Warned Of Ebola Virus Threat

Mataram, W Nusa Tenggara, Sept 3 (Antara) - Mataram Mayor Ahyar Abduh urged citizens leaving for Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia to be aware of the threat from Ebola virus before leaving to the holy ground of Mecca. "In Mecca, every pilgrim must be cautious about their health and be aware of the Ebola virus contagion," emphasized Ahyar when embarking 325 Hajj pilgrims here on Wednesday. Ahyar reminded the pilgrims that Ebola was a deadly virus and can cause certain death during its 6- to 20-day infection cycle. Therefore, pilgrims have been advised to take meningitis and influenza immunization vaccines before leaving, as an effort to increase endurance. Mataram City government through the Department of Health have already advised prospective Hajj pilgrims and the Hajj committee to immediately seek medical assistance for further examination if anyone experiences influenza-like symptoms. Ahyar noted that the mayor`s office had also taken precautionary steps for Ebola virus outbreak in the city. "Although Ebola virus outbreak has still not been reported in Indonesia, we have to be alert and take preventive measures," Ahyar added. The preventive efforts that have been taken include dissemination of information on Ebola virus symptoms, namely cough, influenza, vomiting, diarrhea, body pain, internal and external bleeding, and fever. The disease is transmitted through direct contact of body fluids, mucus, and blood, with an incubation period usually between five and 10 days. "Community role in disseminating information is very important to increase awareness of Ebola virus," Ahyar added.
