Measures prepared for public safety during Songkran

BANGKOK, April 10 (TNA) - Measures have been prepared by agencies concerned for the sake of public safety during the upcoming Songkran, or Traditional Thai New Year, Festival. Department of Civil Aviation Director-General Voradej Harnprasert told journalists that his department has stepped up security measures at airports nationwide, with special surveillance in their restricted areas to prevent any stranger from sneaking to board any flight. Executives of the Department of Land Transport, meanwhile, signed a cooperation agreement with 14 local bus operators to promote safe bus services, especially during the Songkran Festival and other festivals when there are a large number of passengers. Under the agreement, the local bus operators must strictly check conditions of their buses and drivers for the sake of passengers’ safety. The Department of Land Transport also presented honorary plaques and certificates to 45 truck operators who meet standards and are believed to help reduce road accidents, as part of national preparations for the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015.
