Media Need To Run Good Corporate Governance On Journalism

Jakarta, May 21 (Antara) - The International Finance Corporation (IFC), an institution under the World Bank group, has promoted the importance of media industry to run a good corporate governance on its journalistic works. IFC Country Manager Sarvesh Suri said in a conference of media reporting entitled "Corporate Governance, Ethics and Journalism: the Benefits of Good Media Reporting" here on Tuesday, that the challenges for the media industry nowadays included how to report professionally as well as run a modern company with a good corporate governance. "To produce a professional report, a business reporter needs to understand how to regulate a modern company, conditions to achieve company`s success as well as its obstacles and challenges," he said. Therefore, IFC through a media training program has been promoting the important of good corporate governance to the journalists, particularly the business reporter, since 2007. The Director of Center for Media Development, Abdullah Alamudi who delivered a keynote speech said Indonesia was flooded by media reports that majority spotted the bad corporate governance from private and state-owned enterprises. Based on the Law Number 40/2007, Alamudi quoted that the good corporate governance should regulate transparency, accountability, responsibility, and fairness. "In the last few years, we more realize the role of media and press in providing the information to the public as part of their right to know, to monitor, to criticize, and to correct," he said. Hence, Alamudi stressed it is very important for the media to understand the significance of good governance when it was related to the public, they should be able to report each corporate professionally and impartially. Therefore, through this media reporting conference, Alamudi expected the media industries to be more aware of the importance of the good corporate governance, to provide a good corporate governance training to the journalist, particularly business reporter, and to improve the capacity building initiatives for journalists. "I quoted Daniel Kaufmann from the World Bank that good governance was the key to eliminate corruption," he said. The conference of the "Corporate Governance, Ethics and Journalism: the Benefits of Good Media Reporting" was conducted by IFC in cooperation with Indonesia`s Antara News Agency, and moderated by Antara Editor-in-Chief Akhmad Kusaeni. The conference`s speakers also included Paramadina University`s media expert Ade Armando, Chief Editor of Global Investor Magazine Putu Anggreni and Founder and Executive Director of Katadata, a business analyst provider, and Metta Dharmasaputra who was also a former investigative journalist of Tempo Magazine.
