Melaka Chief Minister Suggests Indonesia, Thailand Set Up Consulate Office In Melaka

MELAKA (Malacca, Malaysia), March 9 (Bernama) -- The Melaka state government wants the federal government of Malaysia to convince Thailand and Indonesia to open their consulate office in Melaka to further enhance trade relations. Melaka Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam said the move would be ideal because the three countries are situated in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand growth triangle (IMT-GT). "If we have consulate offices of Indonesia and Thailand here, it will boost the economic growth in the IMT-GT and boost trade in Melaka due to an increased presence of traders from both countries," he told reporters after closing a forum for IMT-GT Chief Ministers and Governors at the Equatorial Hotel here Thursday. The forum was attended by delegates representing the private and public sectors from the provinces and states of the IMT-GT countries. Among those present were Perlis Menteri Besar Md Isa Sabu; Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng; Riau Governor Wira Rusli Zainal; Sumatera Utara Governor Gatot Pudjo Nugroho; Pattani Governor Vitaya Panichpong; Krabi Governor Uten Tanireeboon and Malaysia's Head of Secretariat for IMT-GT, Razali Che Mat. --BERNAMA
