Members agree on Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Framework

BANGKOK, November 13 (TNA) - The First Mekong-Lancang Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Jinghong City, China's southern Yunnan Province this week, in Which Thailand participated, have agreed to set up the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Framework to promote comprehensive development among member countries. The agreement was reached during the two-day meeting in Jinghong from November 11-12, in which Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai and his counterparts from Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam took part. The participants agreed to formulate the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Framework to promote political, economic, social and cultural cooperation between the member countries located in the Mekong River basin and China, which is the origin of the Mekong River, and will work together with other existing frameworks in an integrated manner to promote sustainable development in the region. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who chaired the two-day meeting, said the gathering resolved that the cooperation framework will lead to future meetings of senior officials, foreign ministers and national leaders of member countries, with the session of heads of states set to take place next year. The Thai foreign minister told journalists, meanwhile, that Thailand has emphasized cooperation on water management, connectivity through infrastructure development projects, trade facilitation with local currencies and health. Besides, Thailand has proposed an infrastructure development project, worth 130 million US dollars, and an agricultural cooperation project, which are among 72 urgent cooperation projects that all the member countries proposed at the two-day meeting.
