MERS case found in Omani man

BANGKOK, Jan 24 (TNA) -- Thailand’s Public Health Ministry on Sunday reported a 71-year-old Omani patient suffering from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is now taking a medical treatment. Accompanied by senior ministry officials, Public Health Minister Dr Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn told a press conference that the 71-year-old Omani patient arrived in Bangkok before dawn Friday and he fell sick about a week before travelling to Thailand. The patient is now staying in a quarantine unit of the hospital, Dr Piyasakol said. Meanwhile, a government spokesman said Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha had been informed on the detection of the deadly MERS virus on the Omani man and that he urged people to monitor the situation without being panic and to also have full confidence on the country’s public health service. The spokesman quoted Gen Prayut as saying that he was worried and asked everyone to look after the health as the disease could not be contracted easily unless a person stays close with a patient and without protection gear.
