Migrant workers Show Irresponsible Attitude

By Nur Arifah Md Razif KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- The irresponsible attitude of migrant workers who come in droves to the federal capital to sight see, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festive season is causing disgust and anger among the locals. A Bernama survey in the areas around famous shopping malls in the city like Suria KLCC, Central Market and the renowned Tuanku Abdul Rahman Road shopping outlets, found many of them spitting indiscriminately at five-foot paths, bus stands, parks and outside shopping centres. Throwing caution to the wind, some of them were also seen chewing betel nut and spitting at random, dirtying the surrounding areas. At the bus-cum-taxi stand in front of KLCC, many foreign nationals were seen placing their feet on concrete benches while smoking and discarding cigarette butts to their whims and fancy. For local college student, Nurfarisha Aziz, 19, who came to the federal capital with her friends, her desire to sightsee fizzled when she spotted many foreign nationals wandering aimlessly outside the Suria KLCC. "Our delight at sightseeing turned to gloom when we saw the place full of noisy foreigners who were dirtying public places...their presence in big groups gave us the jitters," she said. A local visitor, M. Karupiah, 40, who went to the Central Market to shop was also of the opinion that most foreign nationals he met did not observe cleanliness, especially in areas of tourist focus. "They are not civic-minded and dumped garbage indiscriminately although rubbish bins were provided," he observed. Meanwhile, a stall trader near the Sogo shopping complex, Hasimah Awang, 50, expressed disappointment at the behaviour of foreign nationals who spat and threw garbage discriminately. "Numerous waste bins are provided but they still insisted in throwing rubbish everywhere. So, it is little wonder that the condition in Kuala Lumpur is dirtier than normal on public holidays," she noted. Taxi driver Razak Ahmad, 46, who often picked passengers from around KLCC also expressed regret at the antics of foreign nationals who 'camped' with their friends in the area. "I feel very disappointed seeing them spitting as they pleased all over the place and dirtying the areas around the shopping complex which is the area of focus. "I hope the authorities and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall take appropriate action," he said. -- BERNAMA
