Minister: Terminals of some airports to be expanded in Kazakhstan

Astana, Kazakhstan, Nov.25 By Daniyar Mukhtarov - Trend: As a result of the growth of passenger traffic, terminals at several airports will be expanded in Kazakhstan, Kazakh Minister of Transport and Communications Askar Zhumagaliyev told Trend. "Runways will be reconstructed and terminals expanded at the republic's airports where a strong growth of passenger traffic is being observed. Currently it is planned to reconstruct runways at five airports located in the regions and expand terminals at eight airports, including Almaty and Astana," the minister said. He recalled that currently there are around 18 airports in Kazakhstan including those at Almaty and Astana and in all provincial centres, as well as in the cities of Zheskazgan and Semey which do not have the status of provincial centres. "The reconstruction of the runway at Taraz has already been completed. Work on laying a track bed in Taldy-Kurgan will be completed this year and the full reconstruction of the runway will be completed next year. In addition, we will begin to reconstruct the runways in Uralsk and Petropavlovsk next year," Zhumagaliyev said. According to the minister, the reconstruction of runways at Kostanay and Ust-Kamenogorsk will be completed in 2017. "When it comes to the expansion of terminals at the republic's airports, the work will be carried out till 2020. It is necessary to carry out this work in order to adequately respond to the growth in passenger traffic which stands at 10 per cent per year," the minister said. The minister stressed that the expansion of the terminals will be carried out through a partnership of public and private sectors. "In particular the expansion of terminals at cities such as Ust-Kamenogorsk and Shymkent will be carried out through a partnership of public and private sectors," Zhumagaliyev added.
