MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS NAMES ITS 2013 EVENTS

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia announced the most important events of the current year. 1. The Ministerial Conference of Community of Democracies As chairing the Community of Democracies (CoD), Mongolia hosted the 7th Ministerial Conference of the CoD on April 27-29 in Ulaanbaatar. The conference brought together 800 delegates from 103 countries. This international event has raised a reputation of Mongolia at the international arena. 2. Cooperation with World Economic Forum Thanks to signing a cooperation memorandum with the World Economic Forum NGO (WEF), Mongolia has gained a big progress towards formulating a national developmental strategy and propagandizing itself at an international field. In frames of this, a roundtable meeting "Strategic dialogue on Mongolian development" was held on September 14-15 in Ulaanbaatar, which has significantly contributed to determining long-term developmental versions, co-seeking the best solutions and strengthening the multilateral talks on the developmental policy. In addition, the event had an importance for giving a right view to foreign countries on open and democratic nation to make investments. 3. Largest number of international treaties and agreements in history This year, Mongolia established 63 bilateral and multilateral contract and other documents. Among them, the most important are the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with the European Union (EU), the Agreement on Transparency in Matters Related to International Trade and Investment with the USA, the Middle-Term Programme on Developing Strategic Partnership with Japan, and the Middle- and Long-Term Programme on Developing Strategic Partnership with the People’s Republic of China (PRC). 4. Protection of interests of Mongolians abroad Mongolia augmented size of budget for the foundation of assisting Mongolians abroad in order to expand its activities. Moreover, this foundation has been supporting Mongolian-language schools and kindergartens abroad by providing them with textbooks, and backing voluntary associations and societies established by Mongolians. With an aim at protecting interests of Mongolians abroad and quick delivery of consular service, the Foreign Ministry opened Embassies in Indonesia and Brazil; the General Consulates in Istanbul of Turkey and in Bishkek of Kyrgyzstan. Consulates opened in Khailaar (China) and in Pusan (South Korea), and the Embassy reopened in Afghanistan as well. 5. Election runs abroad During the sixth election of President, ballot papers were collected from abroad through the Mongolian Embassies. The sub-commissions registered and ensured 6,233 people, and 4,248 people or 68.2% of them cast their votes. 6. Mutual visiting terms facilitated Mongolia established the visa-free agreement with Turkey, Belarus and Serbia. Furthermore, such agreements were established with Brunei, Colombia, Peru, Kuwait and Myanmar for the diplomatic and official passport holders. Agreements were signed with France and Germany on the visa-free visiting for the only biometric diplomat passport holders. 7. Establishment of Foundation for International Cooperation Mongolia created the Foundation for International Cooperation with a main purpose to share its experience with developing countries in democracy, human rights and market economy. The foundation has the biggest importance to exchange experience with others in democratic actions, maintaining the Concepts of National Security and the Foreign Policy, to strengthening its reputation and position at an international arena and to implement its goal for expanding the bilateral cooperation with some countries through a “soft” policy. 8. Ulaanbaatar Talks on Northeast Asian issue The President of Mongolia Ts.Elbegdorj put forward an initiative on launching the Ulaanbaatar Talks on Security in Northeast Asia in frames of the national foreign policy about defusing a tension in the Korean peninsula and ensuring the security in Northeast Asia. The Mongolian side has made big efforts to realize the Talks by reporting it to the related parties and attracting them to the talks. In addition to this, Ulaanbaatar hosted the Forum of Women Parliamentarians of Northeast Asian Countries. 9. Number of high-level visits and dialogues rises With a purpose of fortifying the bilateral and multilateral relations and cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs implemented 35 high-level visits home and abroad. For example, Mongolia received the visits of the Presidents of Poland, the European Commission, the Governor-General of Canada; parliamentary Speakers of China, Denmark, Poland, Finland and South Korea; and Prime Ministers of Japan, Turkey, Thailand and Belarus. Moreover, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of 18 countries such as Great Britain, France and New Zealand paid visits to Mongolia. It is considered this is an expression of Mongolia to widen its relations and cooperation with neighbours and the "Third neighbour" countries. 10. Diplomatic relations established with 11 countries Within an aim to establish diplomatic relations with all UN members, Mongolia signed official statements on making the diplomatic relations with Antigua and Barbuda, Eritrea, Burundi, Vanuatu, Palau, Suriname, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda, Rwanda and Micronesia. 11. "One window" policy of foreign relations In present times of expanding of the foreign relations, Mongolian government approved a rule on ensuring the unity of state foreign policy and its actions. This rule aims to provide foreign countries with right and real information about Mongolia and to make a sustainable and understandable environment for investors. Thanks to the rule, a condition was created to make rights and responsibilities of state organizations more clear and to heighten the responsibilities. 12. World Future Council awards Mongolian policy The World Future Council highly spoke the Mongolia's nuclear weapon-free policy and a law on nuclear weapon-free status, and awarded it with its prize. The prize granting ceremony took place on October 23 in the UN Headquarters in New York, USA. 13. Cultural pieces registered in UNESCO The UNESCO heritage of cultural and historical pieces registered the “Ganjuur” Sutra made of nine precious stones in 111 volumes. This Sutra was made in 1819. In addition, the UNESCO heritage of intangible cultural pieces listed the Mongolian calligraphy and Mongolian ger “national dwelling and its traditional craftsmanship”.
