MONGOLIA TO INTENSIFY DEVELOPMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY COOPERATING WITH CUBA

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On May 18, the National University of Mongolia (NUM) in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Mongolia organized a discussion. The discussion covered a wide range of issues such as establishment of cooperation with the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Cuba and expansion of its cooperation with Cuba in the frames of achievements of science of medicine and biotechnology fields such as vaccines for Hepatitis B and C and technology of treating diabetes. Opening the discussion, President of the NUM Ya.Tumurbaatar said that in order to enter into global biotechnology market, Mongolia needs to cooperate with Cuba. According to the ‘UNESCO Science Report Towards 2030’, the Republic of Cuba has been successfully developing innovation. In Cuba, procession innovation, organizational innovation and product innovation have been developed as priority. Ten high-technology companies are operating in Cuba. As for Mongolia, capacity of research laboratories at the state-owned universities are being improved. “In Mongolia, it is priority to intensify researches on communicable diseases transmission, immunization, environment hygiene, and blood circulation diseases, common diseases among children, youth and women; diabetes and liver disease,” Ya.Tumurbaatar said, mentioning there are necessities to learn technology for transplantation and their genome researches; biotechnology diagnosis, technologies of producing and manufacturing new medicine and bio preparation, and conducting researches on unified theory of modern and traditional medical science. Representatives from professional organizations including the NUM, the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, and the Mongolian University of Life Sciences, the Ministry of Health and the National Security Council expressed that they agreed with cooperating with the Republic of Cuba in direction of biotechnology field. Moreover, as biotechnology field covers a wide range of scope, they sides decided to make a recommendation and proposals regarding cooperating in specific directions. Besides, they agreed to plan and implement specific activities towards developing cooperation with the Republic of Cuba by forming a joint team and working group consisting of scientists in biotechnology and genetic engineering.
