Mongolians celebrate World religion day

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Mongolia’s Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’s celebrated the world religion day in the Chinggis Khaan hotel on Sunday. This year’s theme "Family Development" was in accordance with the Population Development and Social Welfare Ministry’s announcing of this year as a Family Support year and its "My Family" child development program. At the celebration, representatives of various religions prayed, meditated and shared views. Each representative also held a 5-10 minutes presentation on family development. At the event present were S.Tsedendamba, a member of the Council on Religious Affairs under Mongolia’s President, Ts.Tuvshintogs, a state-prized teacher, and others. The third Sunday in January is annually celebrated as World Religion Day. It was established by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United States in 1950 as a way to encourage interfaith understanding. Many organizations celebrate the day by holding interfaith events where faith leaders get together to give talks and lectures. People are encouraged to talk to and listen to people from faiths different than their own and to understand the basic tenants of other religions. The Baha'i Faith in Mongolia dates back only to the late 1980s and early 1990s, as prior to that point the spread of the religion was impeded to that country. The first Baha'i arrived in Mongolia in 1988, and the religion established a foothold there, later establishing a Local Spiritual Assembly. Though the Association of religion Data Archives estimated some 50 Baha'is in 2005 more than 1,700 Mongolian Baha'is turned out for a regional conference in 2009.
