More than 4,000 World Cup gamblers nabbed

BANGKOK, July 6 (TNA) - More than 4,000 suspects allegedly involved in betting on the 2014 World Cup have been apprehended while over 300 bookmakers nabbed so far, said deputy national police chief Pol.Gen. Aek Angsananont on Sunday. Also, some 1,200 websites which allowed betting for soccer have been shut down by police while they are preparing to close more than 300 others, Pol.Gen. Aek said. Senior police officers responsible for suppressing gambling on the World Cup held a meeting Sunday to follow up progress they made on the illegal betting. Pol. Gen. Aek said police would blacklist those arrested bookmakers while they would closely watch the betters after the World Cup tournament ends, hoping that they would stop gambling behavior in future. On entertainment venues which telecast the World Cup matches live, especially those at tourist destinations, he said police would try to talk to the owners that betting is illegal before making any arrest in order “not to ruin tourism climate”.
