More downpours expected in Thailand as another storm approaches

BANGKOK, September 28 (TNA) - The Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rainfall is expected in northeastern Thailand as tropical storm ‘Wutip” is moving towards the upper part of the South China Sea and is projected to enter Vietnam next Tuesday. The Department warned on Saturday that northeastern Thailand which has already been devastated by severe flooding is expected to encounter another round of heavy rainfall after the tropical storm enters the upper part of Vietnam. Moreover, the monsoon trough which is projected to pass central and eastern provinces during the period, which would cause heavy rainfalls in 10 provinces in both the regions, it said. Meanwhile, several northern, northeastern and central provinces are currently being hit by severe flooding with floodwaters in some provinces measured at nearly two metres. In the northern province of Phichit, a highway in the provincial seat was cut off for a distance of nearly three metres due to strong flood currents. Heavy rain in the past few days in the northern province of Chiang Rai had destroyed a road leading to a village in Mae Fa Luang district. Houses, temples and a child care centre in Buri Ram’s Satuk district were Saturday under floodwater, measuring at nearly one metre. There are signs that the flood level is to continue rising. The overall flood situation in a community in the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani is also gruesome because floodwater measuring at nearly two metres has forced villagers to travel by boat. A dyke in Uthai Thani province has collapsed, flooding over 20,000 rai of paddy field in two villages. (TNA)
