More efforts to cope with corruption in Thailand

BANGKOK, March 10 (TNA) - Most business operators view that more efforts have been made in the society over the past two years to cope with corruption in Thailand. A seminar on the corruption situation in Thailand, organized in Bangkok on Monday by the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) and the Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand, acknowledged results of a latest research on corruption in Thailand, including a survey on business operators, finding that 93 per cent of the surveyed business persons viewed that corruption remained serious in the country and 75 per cent of them pointed out that corruption was even growing in the past two years. However, the research found that there were better efforts to cope with corruption from 2011-2013 and the proportion of costs resulting from corruption dropped significantly from 52-20 per cent. Besides, the research found that the three most common kinds of corruption in Thailand are the abuse of political positions for the interest of associates, bribery and policy-related corruption, and that corruption is the most likely in the telecommunications, energy, public utilities and agricultural businesses and raises the costs of business operators by at least 10 per cent. TDRI's academic Boonwara Sumano said Transparency International gave only 35 points to Thailand for its transparency, lower than the scores of Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines, while some organizations ranked Thailand better at the 52nd position among 142 countries. For national competitiveness, Thailand was ranked the 37th place among 148 countries worldwide and the 4th in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), after Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. TDRI's research director Deunden Nikomborirak noted that over the past 4-5 years, the corruption situation in Thailand were not different from countries that had just changed their government to democracy.(TNA)
