More than two tons of narcotics destroyed in Thailand

AYUTTHAYA, THAILAND, December 17 (TNA) - The Thai government has destroyed 2,167 kilograms of narcotics, worth about 6.57 billion baht, through the environmentally-friendly incineration system. Thai Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Yuthavong on Thursday presided over and witnessed the incineration of the seized drugs, mostly methamphetamine, at the Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate in the central Ayutthaya Province. The Court of First Instance approved the elimination of the drugs, seized from 1,059 narcotic cases, through the incineration, in which a high heat of at least 850 degrees Celsius is applied to prevent pollution. Meanwhile, Public Health Minister Dr. Rajata Rajatanavin told journalists that it was the 44th drug incineration, comprising about 19 million pills or 1,754 kilograms of methamphetamine worth 5.85 billion baht, 318 kilograms of "ice" or crystal methamphetamine worth 637 million baht, 86 kilograms of heroin worth 68 million baht, three kilograms of cocaine worth 10 million baht, 1,840 pills or 0.45 kilogram of "ecstasy" worth 1.8 million baht and 0.81 kilogram of opium worth 25,000 baht. Seized drugs of 2,933 kilograms, worth 7 million baht, from the Royal Thai Police's Narcotic Suppression Bureau and another 2,546 kilograms of marijuana from the northeastern Ubon Ratchathani Province were also incinerated.
