Moscow suggests signing Russia-Bahrain extradition treaty

MOSCOW, April 6. /TASS/. Russia has suggested signing an extradition treaty with the Kingdom of Bahrain. A spokesperson for Russia’s Prosecutor-General’s Office Marina Gridnyova has told TASS that during its current two-day official visit to Bahrain a delegation of Russia’s prosecutor’s office led by Prosecutor-General Yury Chaika is due to meet Bahrain’s Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa. According to Gridnyova, the two sides are planning to discuss bilateral cooperation in the legal sphere, including increasing the effectiveness of joint efforts in combating international crime. Among the issues under discussion will be a bilateral extradition treaty, which is being prepared for signing. In addition to that, there’re plans of concluding a treaty on legal assistance in criminal cases. The Memorandum on Cooperation with the Prosecutor-general’s office of the Kingdom of Bahrain signed on Monday and also contacts established during the meetings with the Minister of Justice, the prosecutor-general and chairman of the Supreme Court of Arbitration of the Kingdom of Bahrain create real opportunities for a new level of interaction between our two countries in the legal sphere, the Russian prosecutor’s office said. During a visit to the United Arab Emirates on November 25 Yury Chaika and UAE’s Minister of Justice Sultan bin Saeed Al Badi signed the inter-state treaties on extradition and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters. Draft contracts at the expert level were agreed following three rounds of Russian-Emirati consultations in 2009, 2011 and 2014. Under the Extradition Treaty, the parties undertake to extradite persons on request for criminal prosecution or execution of sentence for an extraditable offense. Read more
