M'sia Wants Concerted Action To End Children's Suffering In War

PUTRAJAYA, June 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has called for concerted action to alleviate the sufferings of children affected by war. At the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on Children in Armed Conflict in New York on Thursday, Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman also emphasised the importance of holding perpetrators of grave violations against children, accountable. According to a foreign ministry statement Friday, Anifah also urged for action to be taken under national or international justice mechanisms. In this regard, he expressed dismay that despite the high number of Palestinian children killed and injured during last year’s 50-day war in Gaza, the international community had failed to ensure that Israel was held accountable. He also announced Malaysia's endorsement of the Safe Schools Declaration, which was adopted on May 29, this year in Oslo, Norway. The open debate provided a platform to discuss the 14th annual report of the Secretary-General on Children in Armed Conflict, as well as placed emphasis on the issue of abduction of children in armed conflict. Over 75 member states participated in the open debate. The statement said the open debate was one of the key events under Malaysia’s presidency of the council for June this year. -- BERNAMA
