M'sian Science University Uses Probiotics As Alternative For Antibiotics For Chickens

GEORGE TOWN (Penang, Malaysia), June 20 (Bernama) -- A group of University Science Malaysia (USM) researchers has developed a new alternative for antibiotics for chickens by inserting probiotics as additional nutrient for the poultyry. The probiotics is an extract from kimchi, which is among the popular foods in Korea. The adviser of USM Programme-Industry-Community: Cooperation Towards Result-Impact for the Good of Society, Prof Madya Dr Liong Min Tze said through studies conducted, USM found the usage of probiotics to replace antibiotics given to chickens turned out better in efforts to produce healthier chickens. He said according to the study, probiotics given to chickens in TerokaJaya Farm - a natural project laboratory - in Balik Pulau showed positive results, especially in the chicken's health. "We realise that most farmers, in wanting to ensure good chicken growth, give additional supplements such as antibiotics. "However, the particular supplements sometimes cause side-effects, which includes affecting the chickens' health," he said at a press conference here Friday. Liong said the study was also carried out in collaboration with several industrial partners, especially Probionic Corp from South Korea and TerokaJaya Farm for producing probiotics to seek a better subtitute for antibiotics to be given to chickens. "Changes in the health and growth of chickens can be seen in 42 days after being fed with probiotics, and it will act against harmful bacteria in the intestines and maintain good health. "Most importantly, livestock productivity can be improved as the probiotics are capable of reducing animal death rate," he added. Meanwhile, ProBionic Corp founder Prof Dr Park Yong-Ha said the probiotics were generated from kimchi extract, and had many benefits. -- BERNAMA
