M'sian University UMT Signs MoU With Four Foreign Universities On Tropical Fisheries

KUALA TERENGGANU (Terengganu, Malaysia), Dec 3 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding with four universities, one each from Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and Phillippines for a postgraduate programme on tropical fisheries with international linakage. The collaboration to prepare a higher education system with local rules and one that fulfils global standards was embarked upon by UMT with Kagoshima University (Japan), Sam Ratulangi University (Indonesia), Visayas University (Philippines) and Kasetsart University (Thailand). UMT vice-chancellor, Prof Emeritus Dr Ibrahim Komoo said the collaboration marked an important milestone for UMT which was embarking on a joint programme for a postgraduate (masters) degree with foreign universities for the very first time. "Through this postgraguate programme on tropical fisheries with international linkage, students would register at their university of choice, then they would be required to take at least ten credit hours, of which six have to be taken at one of the other four universities. "The international linkage programme would be carried out intensively for three to six weeks, based on subjects offered at the universities respectively, and at UMT, the course would begin during the September intake next year, whereas in Japan it would begin in April, and in Phillippines and Thailand, next August," he told a press conference after the signing. Universiti Kagoshima was represented by its deputy dean of its Fisheries Faculty, Professor Dr Shunsuke Koshio; Universiti Sam Ratulangi by its Fisheries and Marine Science Faculty dean, Profesor Dr Grevo Soleman Gerung; Universiti Visayas by the dean of its College of Fisheries and Marine Science, Professor Dr Crispino A.Saclauso and Professor Suriyan Tunkijjanukij, the dean of Universiti Kasetsart's Fisheries Faculty. -- BERNAMA
