M'sian Waters Not A Transit, Storage Point For Firearms - PDRM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (Bernama) -- Marine Operations Force commander Abdul Aziz Yusof said Malaysian waters are not a transit or storage point for illegal firearms. He denied a newspaper reports that Port Klang was being used as a location for storing of firearms owned by merchant ships. "This allegation followed misinterpretation of audio communication between the ship, Port Klang traffic control tower and the harbour guide," he said in a statement Wednesday. According to rules established by Port Klang Authority (PKA), all boats that bring in firearms, ammunition and armed security guards have to declare in advance before entering the harbour. Abdul Aziz said according to procedures, merchant ships entering the port should apply for a firearms licence from the police via a registered company. "On the report involving a ship, the appointed company, Kaisar Maritime (M) Sdn Bhd had contacted the ship for unloading of firearms to be kept in a store. "This intercepted communication has been misinterpreted by people unfamiliar with the procedures for carrying or storing of firearms at the port." He hoped the media would be more careful when making news reports as inaccurate reports can cause anxiety among the public. "It also challenges the credibility of authorities in implementing the law for the welfare of the people and the country," he added. -- BERNAMA
