Myanmar women nabbed for allegedly involving in illegal worldwide phone service case

RANONG, THAILAND, October 11 (TNA) - Thai authorities have arrested a group of Myanmar women suspected to have involved in a case in which a phone signal was hijacked in seaside Ranong Province in the Thai South, opposite Myanmar's Kawthaung Township, for providing an illegal worldwide call service. Thakorn Tanthasit, Secretary General of Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), told journalists that the eight Myanmar women were nabbed after NBTC officials, in cooperation with local police, raided and search a three-storey commercial building in Ranong's Bang Non area on Friday. Thakorn said that the move followed earlier tip-offs that there was an illegal use of the UHF 450-megahertz frequency at the building. During the search, the Thai authorities found the eight female Myanmar operators and they also seized 37 telephone sets and books containing customers' phone numbers. According to the NBTC chief, the eight Myanmar women were charged with allegedly hijacking the phone signal for providing an illegal worldwide call service and will be prosecuted. (TNA)
