Myanmar workers join campaign against labour abuse

RANONG, THAILAND, May 1 (TNA) - Crowds of Myanmar migrant workers in Ranong Province have joined in activities to celebrate the National Labour Day in the southern Thai province, including a parade to campaign against all forms of labour abuse. More than 3,000 Myanmar migrant workers showed up for National Labour Day activities on Saturday (May 1) morning at Ban Khao Ni-wet Municipality School in Muang District. The parade alone was aimed at campaigning against all forms of labour abuse, including the use of child labour, forced begging and prostitution, forced labour on fishing boats and human trafficking. Ranong Labour Chief Suranart Jituafua said that the campaign was launched this year as Thailand has been watched for alleged labour abuse and human trafficking and he believes the alleged labour abuse on migrant workers and human trafficking will eventually disappear from Ranong, located opposite Myanmar's Kawthaung Township, due to cooperation from employers, workers and other concerned parties. Meanwhile, a Myanmar worker from Mawlamyine City, told reporters that most Myanmar migrant workers are happy with the higher minimum wage and good welfare in Thailand, but proposing that authorities address the problem of labour abuse by some employers.(TNA)
