Myanmar workers in Thailand returning home for general election

SATUN, THAILAND, November 5 (TNA) - Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand have been returning home to exercise their rights in Myanmar's historic general election on November 8. There are over 2,000 Myanmar migrant workers in Satun Province in the Thai South alone who mostly work in the Thai fishing sector. Aroon Chuprasit, President of Satun's Fishery Association, told journalists on Thursday that some of the Myanmar migrant workers left for home last week. Aroon said some employers of the Myanmar migrant workers have even helped them prepare necessary documents to be used for exercising their vote in Myanmar's upcoming general election and also provided them with conveniences for returning home. Besides, some private-run enterprises even encouraged their Myanmar migrant workers to exercise their rights. A fishing pier in nearby Songkhla Province in the Thai South, where several Myanmar workers are employed, has been quiet as its Myanmar workers have gone home to cast their votes. Two main parties are contesting the upcoming general election in Myanmar, the first national poll in the neighbouring country since 1990, including the army-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party and the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
