Nanning's Local Authority Investigating Gas Leak Incident - Foreign Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- The local authority in Nanning, China is investigating the gas leak incident in which five Malaysians were killed on Sunday night, said the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra). The five men were reported to have died due to carbon monoxide poisoning while a Malaysian woman survived the incident. "The local authority is currently investigating this incident, and officers from the Consulate-General of Malaysia in Kunming are making efforts to render the necessary assistance," Wisma Putra said in a statement here Wednesday. The deceased are Chin Yoke Weng, 61; Seah Foon Hong, 48; Tay Chong Chai, 42; Tan Bian Chiang, 41; and Ng Wei Shan, 28; while the survivor is Lim Ching Lin. It was reported that they were believed to have inhaled leaking poisonous gas while staying in an apartment there. "The Ministry (Wisma Putra) wishes to convey our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the deceased," Wisma Putra said in the statement. Wisma Putra added that the group was in Nanning for a business trip, as they entered China from Guangzhou on Sunday (March 15) before heading to Nanning the very same day. -- BERNAMA
