National Labour Day activities organised in Thailand

BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) - Activities have been organised in Thailand, marking the National Labour Day on every May 1, which coincides with the International Workers' Day. In Bangkok, Labour Minister General Surasak Kanjanarat led his ministry's officials and representatives of workers to offer alms to nine Buddhist monks at Makkawan Rangsan Bridge near Government House on Saturday (Fri) morning. General Surasak told the participants that the Thai government has always attached importance to the National Labour Day and made it a holiday for employees. As previous years, representatives of workers took the opportunity to air their problems and demands. This year the workers' representatives raised 11 demands which are similar to those raised by them last year. According to the labour minister, many demands raised by the workers' representatives this year match what the government is doing, including the establishment of an institute to promote occupational safety and hygiene and appropriate working environment, the improvement of the labour protection law, preparations for the ratification of labour conventions and tax exemption for benefits from provident funds. The labour minister noted, however, that a working group has been set up to speed up responses to the workers' demands. The National Labour Day's celebrations this year were focused on activities to honour His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on the auspicious occasion of the revered Princess's 60th birthday in 2015, as well as to promote national reconciliation and prepare workers for the formation of the ASEAN Community (AC) by the end of this year.
