NCPO determines to solve labour problem

BANGKOK, June 22 (TNA) - The ruling National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) is determined to solve lingering labour problem in Thailand and will inform the U.S. government about its efforts, said a deputy NCPO spokesman. Colonel Winthai Suvaree said the NCPO, has attached great importance on labour problem in Thailand as it has prepared a clear policy and set up a panel to help tackle the problem. His remarks were made after the United States on Friday released the 2014 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, downgrading Thailand into the “Tier 3” Watch List which is the lowest standing. Thailand has been accused of allowing human trafficking, slavery and gross human rights abuses to occur in the country. Works on two tasks have already begun, Colonel Winthai said. The tasks are managing migrant workers and enforcing the law against the wrongdoers involved in human trafficking, child labour and slavery. These problems have continued for a long time and they have eroded foreign confidence and could damage Thailand’s economy, he said, adding that the NCPO would solve the crux systematically to improve the image of Thailand in the eyes of foreign countries. Colonel Winthai said the downgrade would “not stay permanently”. It would depend on efforts by accused governments to improve the situation in their countries and increase standards on eradicating human trafficking. Asked whether Thailand will explain to the U.S. government about the NCPO efforts, Colonel Winthai said “explanation will have to be made along with positive changes”. (TNA)
