NCPO takes longer consideration on former PM’s request for oversea trip

BANGKOK, February 8 (TNA) -- The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) will take a longer consideration over a request by former prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on taking an oversea trip because she is facing criminal charges over the controversial rice-pledging scheme, according to a spokesperson of the military council. He said the NCPO applies stricter consideration on the former premier’s request for oversea travel to prevent its impact on the legal procedure. The spokesman’s remarks were made after sources of the Royal Thai Army said that Yingluck in late January requested the NCPO to travel to Hong Kong on February 8. The NCPO turned down the request and asked her to postpone her trip. On January 23, the Office of the Attorney-General decided to soon file criminal charges against her with the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders over the controversial rice pledging scheme, which is accused of causing massive losses to the state. On the same day, the military-dominated National Legislative Assembly also voted to impeach Yingluck over her role in the rice-pledging scheme, which immediately banned her from politics for five years. Yingluck is accused by the National Anti-Corruption Committee for dereliction of duty for failing to stop corruption and massive losses in the rice scheme which was sponsored by her government.
