NCPO won’t use special measure against opposing students: Spokesperson

BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) – The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has assured that it has not and will not take any special measure against anti-coup students, in the wake of the arrests of students who staged small-scale protests against the military rule on the first anniversary of the May 22 coup on Friday. NCPO Spokesperson Colonel Winthai Suvaree told a press conference on Saturday that the NCPO has instructed the military and police to create understanding among opposing students and youths when dealing with them and he said the security officials adhere to the order. “Deputy Defence Minister and Army Commander-in-Chief General Udomdej Sitabutr has instructed soldiers and police to deal with protesting students fairly”, he said. Dozens of students were rounded up by soldiers and police on Friday after they protested against the military rule in Bangkok and the northeastern province of Khon Kaen. Images of officials hurting protesting students were also seen on social media. Colonel Winthai insisted that no students were hurt and the public should be cautious in receiving false information. All the detained students were all reportedly released on Saturday morning. When asked how the NCPO would deal with the anti-coup students, Colonel Winthai said the military council would not take any special measure against them and they would not even be summoned for ‘attitude adjustment’. However, if they broke the laws again, they would be summoned for talks but police would try not to press any charge against them, he said. (TNA)
