NCPO:Peace talks in Thai far South will be continued

YALA, THAILAND, July 7 (TNA) - The army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) says that peace negotiations between Thai authorities and representatives of insurgent groups in the Thai far South will be continued with care and attempts to develop mutual trust. Deputy Army Chief General Udomdet Sitabutr, who is also NCPO Secretary General, confirmed the peace negotiation continuation on Monday, during his trip to the violence-plagued Thai deep South to follow up the updated situation and to meet local Islamic leaders on the occasion of the ongoing Ramadan month of fasting. General Udomdet also confirmed that the secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC) will continue to head the state peace negotiation team. However, the NCPO secretary general noted without elaborating that forms of peace talks in the Thai deep South at the local level could be adjusted to create mutual trust. According to the NCPO secretary general, the junta is seriously solving problems in the southernmost Thai region in an integrated manner. The NCPO secretary-general acknowledged that violent incidents in the Thai far South has been declining year-on-year. The NCPO secretary-general's ongoing visit to Yala and Pattani Provinces is his first trip to the violence-plagued region in his capacity as the head of a committee to solve problems in the southern border Thai region. Meanwhile, a ranger was instantly killed and another was injured in a roadside bomb attack in Yala's Tharn To District on Monday morning. The violent incident took place while a group of 10 rangers were on their daily on-foot patrol in the area. A probe found that the bomb, hidden in a roadside forest, was detonated when the security officers passed by the area. (TNA)
