Nearly 200 people killed in road accidents during Thai New Year festival

BANGKOK, April 13 (TNA) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that in the first four days of the road safety campaign week for the Songkhran festival there were 1,735 traffic accidents, in which 191 people were killed and 1,808 others were injured. The highest number of accidents, 66 was recorded in Chiang Mai province, the highest number of dead victims at nine was reported in Roi Et and the highest number of the injured, 71 was in Surat Thani. On the fourth day of the road safety campaign or April 12, there were 520 accidents, in which 70 people were killed and 527 others were injured. Of the total accidents, 41.92% resulted from drunk driving and 21.73% from speed limit violation. Motorcycles were involved in 83.33% of the accidents and 31.66% of motorcyclists in the accidents did not wear helmets. About 61% of the accidents happened on straight roads, 36% on highways and 40% on local roads. The most common period of the accidents was from 4pm to 8pm. About 56% of victims were in working ages. Thirty-six provinces remained free of road accident fatalities. (TNA)
